There are a lot of concerns about diesel cars since the Volkswagen incident yet diesel cars are still very popular due to its phenomenon fuel efficiency. This trend is true in my country(South Korea) as well. We used to have very low diesel fuel price compared with gasoline but now it’s pretty close, but still due to fusel efficiency you pay less fuel cost than that of gasoline. So diesel engine cars will be prospering for a while especially under a bad economy circumstances.
However, in my case, I didn’t choose diesel cars over gasoline only because of fuel efficiency although it’s extra benefit. I chose diesel cars because it has more power in low speed. Even in high speed it’s powerful enough. Some people say diesel car has slow response time when acceleration. This is true. However, if you are used to it, you can manage it. Before you want to accelerate, shift gear down a little bit or hit on accelerator in multiple times, make engine ready for boosting speed when I am ready. With this trick, I could accelerate whenever I am in need without having to worry about slow response time.
For a short period of time, I used to drive Mini Cooper S in gasoline model. “S” represent speed, so it has more boosting power than that of normal Mini Cooper. However, when I bought my current Mini Cooper D (Diesel model) 5 years ago, I got more speed than that of Mini Cooper gasoline in S mode. Since then I am deeply in love with diesel engine cars.
Some people are not big fan of engine sound, so they prefer quiet cars(which would be normally gasoline) but I am in love with engine roaring sound. NOT sh-x-tty engine sound (excuse my language), but with good engine sound. Mini Cooper D model is not a quiet car but it has good engine sound. The benefit is sound level will be similar even if you are in high speed, so after some time of driving Mini Cooper Diesel, you get used to it.
Recently I got rid of my family car Volkswagen Golf because I lost faith in them after their big fat lying incident. In my case, when it comes to a family car, it should have four doors but not too big as I don’t like big cars (especially SUV). At first I thought of Mini Cooper Clubman four door but somehow when Mini Cooper has four door, it doesn’t feel like Mini after all. So I checked out BMW 3/4 series.
BMW 3 series has good performance, but it didn’t give me similar pleasure of driving like Mini Cooper D. (More specifically when I drive Mini Cooper, I could feel road condition as if I was running on foot, also suspension is very hard.) But with BMW 4 series, I could have the pleasure of both comfort and Mini Cooper like fun driving at the same time.
Again as a big fan of diesel engine, I chose diesel model, so I ended up buying BMW 420D Grand Coupe. Compared with BMW 320D, it’s more flat (lower seats position closer to ground) This gave me the feeling of driving Mini Cooper although car size is much bigger than Mini Cooper.
If I need to feel like driving a Mini Cooper D, I can put the driving mode in sport driving mode which makes hard suspension and high RPM mode at all times. In this mode, acceleration is very responsive.
When it comes to fuel efficiency it’s less efficient than Mini Cooper D but considering it’s size and weight, 420D has very impressive mileage performance. Most importantly, you can have both fun factor and comfort factor depending on your mood at your fingertips by simply pressing a mode button.
Some people might have concerns for more pollutants from diesel cars over gasoline. No problem at all. Diesel engine is designed to be very clean as long as you manage to clean carbon sludge from building in the intake manifold at all times. With new car, it won’t be a problem at all for a while. Depending on your driving style, it wouldn’t be big of a deal for years. When this becomes your concern, you can simply install D Clean. This is like a filter installed in front of intake manifold.
