There was an interesting incident that has happened recently, the news about it was spread everywhere. What is surprising about it was because the mistake is coming from the world-famous car brand, BMW Group. Which has sells more than 2 million vehicles in 2017 so far. The incident began at the beginning of this year, many cases of engine fires have occurred in BMW owners in South Korea. BMW said the fires ensue due to the defect in the vehicle’s exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve systems.
EGR itself is engine part that has a function in reducing the emission of NOx gas. A valve is used to control the flow of gas, recirculating a portion of gas back to the combustion chamber. So, the excess level of oxygen distributed into the cylinder becomes reduced. EGR component is always equipped with a cooler to reduce the temperature of the gas before being returned to the combustion chamber. In the incident BMW engine fires above, the EGR valve systems did not function normally as it should.
As a result, on Aug 20 BMW made a recall of 106.317 diesel-fueled vehicles covering 42 models in South Korea. This recall also takes place in other countries such as Europe, Germany, the U.K., Italy, and France reached 1.6 million vehicles in total. The focus of this recall is replacing the EGR valve with an improved part and cleaning the excessive sediment out of the EGR valve. BMW also said that coolant fluid (at this case is glycol) has been leaking out of the EGR cooler. When it is combined with carbon deposit and oil sediment, it becomes the combustible particles. Added with a malfunction in the EGR cooler made high-temperature exhaust gases in this unit ignite the glycol-compound then engine fires happened.
In this case, besides the glycol-leakage caused by company mistake, another effect that triggered this incident was the carbon accumulation in the intake manifold which can easily spread to other engines component including EGR valves. It will cause the fire ignite also it can clog the airway so the EGR function become less optimal.
