Commercial drones have many positive usages to help our daily lives. Nowadays, the development of drone technology has been increasingly advanced, many interesting features are offered by the drone’s company. Most drones, they are equipped with a 4k camera, automatic driving features, and others amazing features with affordable prices.

But, drone also can be a serious threat for being used in illegal and dangerous activities. The drones are like a platform which can carry any objects regardless it is for good deeds or not. It becomes a very dangerous object when it is used by terrorist to carry bombs, smuggling drugs into prisons, or privacy concerns. For government institutions or public service who are dealing with society, it is important to detect the existence of the drones to avoid unwanted things happened. You can detect the presence of drones by using the drone detection systems.

There are two main methods of drone detection in the market:

  1. Radio Frequency (RF)

Commercial drones are usually operated via a radio control signal and it has onboard data link transmitters, typically operate on the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz radio frequency. To detect these signals, a spectrum analyzer is used to monitor the radio frequency spectrum and downlink from the drones to the controller. When a drone has been detected, the systems will begin to identify both locations of drone and its controller then automatically alert the security personnel.

However, spectrum monitoring not a solution for all cases. RF detection will only work when there are RF signals present. Several drones can operate without any radio control signals and can fly using pre-programmed GPS waypoints and it cannot be detected using RF-drone detection systems.

  1. Radar

The second method is radar detection systems, it uses an antenna to sweep the surroundings, sending out radio pulses and detecting those which are reflected from objects. By measuring the time taken for the reflected signals to return, its frequency shift, it is possible to determine the position, range, and speed of the object. To be effective at long range, radar systems require high power, so it cost more than drone detection RF systems. Also, radar-detection systems are challenged with differentiating between a bird and a drone when detecting an object.

By relying on just one detection method it can be possible for a drone to be missed. When using conventional radar, it can be difficult to detect low-flying drone or distinguish drones from birds. When using RF detection, it only works when there are RF signals. So combined method can provide more strong detection capability. Here are some detection methods that can be combined with radar or RF detection systems:

  • Audio detection/Acoustic sensors: it detects the unique sound signatures of the drones.
  • Visual cameras/electro-optical: it detects the drones visual signatures. It includes the ability to scan the sky, looking for variations in pixels, that could represent a drone.
  • Infrared detection: it detects drones based on their heat signature. The more heat an object produces, the more thermal contrast it generates, the easier it is to see in infrared cameras.
