As a Mini Cooper fanatics myself, I drove Mini Cooper diesel for years (over 6 years). I’ve enjoyed its power and lots of other things such as hard suspension which made me feel road conditions as it is. When I bought my Mini Cooper Diesel model, diesel cars were very popular in Korea. People believed diesel cars are not as responsive as gasoline cars when it comes to boosting its power at low speed, but I didn’t feel much latency with mine. So I loved every part of it.
Some people say it’s too noisy, but it’s the part of enjoying Mini Cooper. You need to hear “engine roaring sound”.
Last year was a terrible year for all diesel cars in Korea. Start with Volkswagen diesel gate incident, there were several BMW cars catching fire while driving during summer. Eventually, the Korea government announced that old diesel cars are not allowed to enter Seoul city as it’s the main culprit of air pollution. Even though my Mini Cooper has nothing to do with this accusation, I felt bad. Suddenly, I didn’t feel much excitement with driving my Mini Cooper D anymore. Of course, nothing changed except the perception of the diesel cars.
I discovered myself in the Mini store again a few weeks ago. I wanted to keep it for as long as possible but when I received EGR cooler recall letter from BMW Korea, I couldn’t take it anymore. Rumors say after changing the EGR cooler part, people felt performance degradation. It is suspected that BMW might have changed car’s main software configurations for car’s performance to decrease load for the EGR cooler part. Whether this is true or not, I decided to leave diesel cars.
Meet Mini Cooper S gasoline model
Here I am, I bought a new Mini Cooper again. This time I bought a gasoline model with performance version “S” model. 6 years ago, I felt more power with a diesel model over a gasoline model, but this time, I couldn’t feel any difference. Maybe it could be because of “S” package.
Here are several changes with a new Mini Cooper. To my surprise, it’s very quiet. From the outside of the car, I hear loud roaring engine sound which is what I love about the Mini yet inside the driver seat, I don’t hear it much anymore. Secondly, Mini has gotten bigger. It’s a bit taller than before and it has more space both passenger area and trunk area.
Most importantly, it drives faster and smoother than ever. What a great pleasure!
I’d like to keep this one as long as possible until it’s considered as a classic car in the future. I believe gasoline cars can’t be freed from carbon sludge either, but it would be better than diesel turbo engine. I love roaring sound. Even after full electric cars will be normal, I would still choose combustion engine cars. My journey with new Mini Cooper S has just begun.
